May is National Bike Month!
Cyclists from across Delaware County gathered at the Courthouse in Media on Friday, May 15th, for the 14th Annual Bike to Work Day celebration, coordinated by Delaware County Transportation Management Association and (DCTMA) and the Delaware County Planning Department.
The fun-filled morning featured breakfast treats and refreshments for participants; great raffle gifts donated by local bike shops, restaurants, and other businesses; and free giveaways like sport bottles, safety reflectors and trail maps. Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission was on hand giving out bicycle commuting information and free blinking lights for riders. New this year, DCTMA coordinated an off-duty SEPTA bus for live demonstrations on how to easily mount a bike on the front of the vehicle.
Several county and local dignitaries, business leaders, and DCTMA board members came out to show their support, including:
- Mario Civera, Delaware County Council Chairman
- Mayor Bob McMahon, Media
- Dennis Wolf, Republic Bank & DCTMA Board Chairman
- Eric Ostimchuk, Traffic Planning & Design, Inc. & DCTMA Vice Chair/Secretary/Bike Committee Chair
- Mike Bunner, Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union
- Brian Messick, Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union, AVP Marketing Manager
- Trish McFarland, Delaware County Chamber of Commerce President
- DCTMA hosts Bike to Work Day each year to promote commuting by bike as a healthier, more eco-friendly, and fun way to get to work and school.
- Bike to Work Day 2015 was presented by Boeing and Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union.
DCTMA is also coordinating the first-ever Social Media Cycle Challenge throughout the month of May!
Here's how it works:
- Choose a day (or multiple days) in May to ride your bike to work instead of drive.
- Take a photo of yourself on your bike either en route or when you arrive at your destination (hint: have a coworker or cycling buddy take it of you).
- Take a shot of your odometer showing miles traveled to work OR a screenshot of your map or workout tracking device of choice.
- You can post your photos, plus feel free to add a comment about your ride including your start and finish points, how you liked it, will you do it again, etc.
- There are three ways to share your photos and comments with DCTMA:
- Post to our Facebook page with #B2W515 facebook.com/dctma
- Post to Twitter @DC_TMA #B2W515
- Email lturton@dctma.org and we'll post for you.
Once you've posted, you'll be entered to win great prizes, including bike gear, restaurant gift cards, salon treatments, and other cool stuff! The drawing will be held at the end of May!
