The long Thanksgiving weekend is upon us, and the 2014 holiday season filled with special parties and celebrations will officially kick off. Unfortunately, that means more people under the influence will get behind the wheel. Pennsylvania State Police report that over the five-day Thanksgiving holiday in 2013, 936 crashes were investigated by State Police, 74 of those were alcohol-related, and 433 operators were issued DUIs. That only includes state numbers. PennDOT reports state and municipal police responded to more than 4,600 crashes, 48 of them fatal.
With that in mind, the Delaware County Transportation Management Association is ramping up its special coaster campaign to remind people who have one too many to stay out of their cars and take public transportation instead. The DCTMA team will hand out coasters to select bars along State Street known for their expected large crowds the Wednesday night before Thanksgiving, also informally known as "Blackout Wednesday." There are four different coasters showing the public transit routes directly serving Media Borough, including the 101 Trolley, Media-Elwyn Regional Rail, and the 110 and 118 buses.
