Route 420 South (Wanamaker Avenue) Bridge over Darby Creek CLOSED

TRAVEL ADVISORY

Route 420 South (Wanamaker Avenue) Bridge over Darby Creek to Close Indefinitely in Prospect Park Borough, Tinicum Township

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that the bridge carrying southbound Route 420 (Wanamaker Avenue) over Darby Creek in Prospect Park Borough and Tinicum Township, Delaware County will be closed indefinitely tonight, December 7, following the discovery of significant beam and bearing pedestal deterioration during a recent bridge inspection.

The bridge will remain closed until bridge engineers develop a plan to repair the structure. The design of a project to replace the poor condition bridge is nearing completion and is tentatively scheduled for a construction bid opening in early 2023.

During the bridge closure, southbound Route 420 (Wanamaker Avenue) motorists will be directed to use U.S. 13 (Chester Pike), Stewart Avenue and northbound Interstate 95 to access Route 420.

The Route 420 South (Wanamaker Avenue) bridge over Darby Creek was built in 1930 and reconstructed in 1951. The three-span riveted steel thru-girder bridge is 237 feet long, 31 feet wide, and carries approximately 19,270 vehicles per day.

Motorists can check conditions on more than 40,000 roadway miles, including color-coded winter conditions on 2,900 miles, by visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information and access to more than 1,000 traffic cameras.

Ways you can change your commute to impact air quality

There are many great options for commuters that can make an impact on our environment and our air quality. We have information on all of these options and programs for you!
1.) Share-A-Ride: There is a new and improved Share-A-Ride program that offers over 2,800 rewards for carpooling, cycling, or walking to work! You can also win a $50 gas card when you sign up and start your shared ride!
2.) Telework: During COVID times many people were working from home 100% of the time, or close to it. As many people are transitioning back to the office, if you’re able to work a hybrid schedule and continue working from home 2-3 days per week, that can make a big impact on our environment by reducing emissions on those days.
3.) Take Transit: If you live and work within a reasonable distance to a transit station, Ride SEPTA! Taking transit is an easy way to get to work, and it helps to take the stress out of your commute. Hop on board and let SEPTA do the driving for your commute.
4.) Alternative Work Schedules: If your company allows a flexible schedule, you could see about working 4 – 10 hour shifts per week. You could flex your time in the office so that you are commuting during non-rush hour traffic times to ease your commute and impact air quality.
You can see information on all of these programs on our website.
