9/12/25 Update: SEPTA to Restore Full Service & Implement Fare Increase on September 14

SEPTA to Restore Full Service & Implement Fare Increase on September 14

SEPTA is reminding customers of schedule and fare changes set to take effect on Sunday, September 14. Service details – including links to updated schedules for all Bus routes and Metro and Regional Rail lines – and fare information are available https://wwww.septa.org/news/restored-service-schedules/.

·       Bus & Metro – Full service will resume on Sunday, September 14 and Monday, September 15, depending on route

·       Regional Rail – New fall schedules will begin on Sunday, September 14

·       Fares – The 21.5% fare increase will be reinstated on September 14 for all SEPTA modes and fare products

In response to the prolonged state budget impasse and with no foreseeable resolution to the statewide transit funding crisis, SEPTA took the unprecedented step last Friday of requesting one-time permission to use its state capital assistance to close a $213 million annual operating budget deficit for the next two years. With PennDOT’s approval of this request, and additional revenue from increased fares, SEPTA can reverse the 20% systemwide service cuts that went into effect on August 24.

This is not a solution to SEPTA’s structural budget deficit, nor does it provide new state funding. The finite capital dollars that are being used are already budgeted for SEPTA infrastructure projects, and SEPTA will delay nearly $400 million in projects and vehicle procurements without any commitment that these funds will be replaced.  SEPTA’s current 12-year Capital Program adopted in June already required $1.8 billion in infrastructure and vehicle projects (44 in all) to be deferred or descoped.

SEPTA’s emergency action does not preclude the General Assembly and the Governor from continuing to pursue a statewide transit funding plan, and we continue to urge lawmakers to reach agreement on a sustainable long-term transit funding solution to support all Pennsylvania transit agencies.

Service Changes and Fare Increase Beginning September 14
In preparation for service restoration on September 14, SEPTA has worked quickly to ensure all safety sensitive systems, including signal and dispatch systems, are updated with new schedule data. Bus operators, maintenance crews and other personnel have also had time to transition to new work schedules.

For travel on or after September 14, customers should refer to the PDF timetables available at https://wwww.septa.org/news/restored-service-schedules/ for revised schedules. Trip planning tools available on SEPTA.org and the official SEPTA App will also be helpful in preparing for travel next week.  During the initial rollout of restored service, there may be some lag in information populating to third-party applications.

Customers should also be aware that until SEPTA staff can complete their removal, some signage may still be posted identifying bus stops eliminated as part of the August 24 & 25 service cuts. Those signs should be ignored, and customers can resume boarding at their normal bus stops.
